Uncertainty Surrounds Tamim’s Captaincy Situation

One crucial aspect of their preparations will revolve around the return of ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, who took a surprising retirement decision immediately after leading the team in the first ODI. However, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina convinced him to reconsider his retirement before the second ODI. Nonetheless, Tamim agreed to take a break of one-and-a-half months, which poses questions regarding his comeback and how it will impact the team’s planning.
Preparations for the Asia Cup are scheduled to commence after July 30, according to Jalal Yunus, the Chairman of BCB cricket operations. Until July 30, everyone will have a break, with some players opting to participate in external matches. After the break, the team will kick off preparations with a conditioning camp.
Although Tamim is still regarded as the team’s captain, it remains unclear whether he will resume his role as captain. Jalal did not provide clarity on this matter during his conversation with the media. Jalal stated that discussions with Tamim are ongoing and that his return is contingent on addressing certain fitness concerns. Tamim will travel to Dubai and subsequently to the UK for consultations with specialists regarding his fitness issues.
Jalal explained, “Tamim is going to Dubai, and from there he will proceed to the UK on July 25 or 26. He has appointments at two medical centers and will consult with doctors there. He will keep me updated on the progress.”
The Tigers will assemble a preliminary squad for the Asia Cup and will determine Tamim’s inclusion based on his fitness updates. “We will form a preliminary squad of 25-26 players. Based on his fitness, we will decide when he can join the team,” stated Jalal.
The matter of former ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s involvement as a mentor in the World Cup was also discussed. The final decision lies with the board, and Mashrafe is expected to have formal discussions with them before a decision is made.
