The South African Cricket Board has announced Bavuma as the captain of the team ahead of the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October-November.

Despite Bavuma’s return, the Proteas are not getting another star batsman Rassie van der Dussen in the World Cup due to injury. In the second Test of the series against England, he suffered a fielding injury and fractured his left index finger.

Riley Russo recently returned to international cricket after six years after von der Dusen’s injury got him a chance in the World Cup team. He will have to fight with Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock, and Aiden Markram for a place in the XI. Rabada, Ngidi, Nortje, and all the familiar faces are in the bowling department.

South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), Quinton de Kock, Riza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Dwayne Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Riley Russo, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Tristan Stubbs.
Reserves: Bjorn Fortuin, Marco Janssen, Andile Phehlukwayo.
