Australia has made some surprising choices in their 18-player squad for this year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.

Two unexpected picks include uncapped leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha and inexperienced all-rounder Aaron Hardie, while Test star Marnus Labuschagne has been notably left out of the squad.

Labuschagne’s hopes of representing Australia in the World Cup have been dashed as he was dropped from the one-day side. In contrast, uncapped leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha and Western Australia all-rounder Aaron Hardie have earned spots in the squad for the tournament to be held in India later this year.

Cricket Australia unveiled an extended 18-man squad, which will later be trimmed to 15 members for the World Cup. The squad’s first challenge will be a five-match series in South Africa in September.

Pat Cummins, named captain of the ODI squad, has suffered a fractured wrist and will be sidelined for six weeks. However, he is set to join the ODI squad in South Africa to prepare for his return to play in India. Australia has a three-game series in late September ahead of the World Cup.
