This time around, the 10 IPL franchises have pooled a substantial $31.5 million, earmarked for player acquisitions. The Twenty20 extravaganza, known as cricket’s most affluent tournament, is slated to commence in March.

With the lion’s share of the fees going to the players themselves, AFP identifies five standout stars who could secure significant deals:

Pat Cummins (Australia):
Cummins, absent from this year’s IPL due to a packed schedule, is anticipated to make a triumphant return following his instrumental role in guiding Australia to World Cup victory in India. The 30-year-old fast bowler, renowned for silencing a 100,000-strong crowd in Ahmedabad by dismissing Virat Kohli in the final, earned widespread acclaim for his leadership.

Having set an auction record of $2.17 million in 2019 with the Kolkata Knight Riders, Cummins enters the auction with a top base price of $240,000. Additionally, fellow Australian World Cup winners like Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, and Sean Abbott are also in the hunt for substantial contracts.

Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand):

Gerald Coetzee (South Africa):
A standout talent in the World Cup, Coetzee emerged among the top five bowlers, clinching 20 wickets in the competition. The 23-year-old South African paceman made a promising debut earlier this year and has since showcased his skills across formats, adding depth to the Proteas’ fast-bowling reserves.

Keen to elevate his career through the IPL, Coetzee retains a top-bracket base price of $240,000.

Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka):
Recognized for his knack for pivotal wicket-taking moments with his leg spin, Hasaranga has been a linchpin in Sri Lanka’s white-ball setups. Despite inking a $1.43 million contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2022, the all-rounder was released ahead of the upcoming auction.

With 158 limited-overs wickets and an aggressive T20 batting style, the 26-year-old, sidelined due to injury during the World Cup, maintains a base price of $180,000 and anticipates another lucrative IPL deal.

Hasaranga’s World Cup Campaign Ends Due to Hamstring Injury

Sri Lanka is bracing for a significant blow ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, as star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is likely to miss the tournament. According to reports from Sunday Times, a Sri Lankan publication, Hasaranga has sustained a Grade 3 hamstring tear, leaving no chance for a timely recovery.

Prof. Arjuna de Silva, Head of the Sri Lanka Cricket Medical Panel, shared the concerning news, saying, “We are consulting foreign doctors to see whether he needs surgery or not. If he does, he will be out for at least three months. At the moment, the situation is not that great, and it’s highly unlikely if he can play the World Cup.”

Hasaranga initially suffered the hamstring injury during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and was subsequently ruled out of the Asia Cup as a precaution with the World Cup on the horizon. In his absence, left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage seized the opportunity with an impressive performance in the tournament.

De Silva further explained, “Since he is a key weapon in our attack, we are looking at other options to see how best we can get his services, at least for important games. All that depends on the opinions of the consultant to whom we are trying to show his reports.”

The woes for Sri Lanka don’t stop at Hasaranga’s injury, as pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera is also facing doubts about his participation in the upcoming competition. De Silva mentioned, “Chameera is bowling at the moment but still complains of pain. We have consulted a doctor in the United Kingdom to see how best we could treat him.”

In case Hasaranga is unable to play, Dushan Hemantha is likely to step in as his replacement. Furthermore, seamers Lahiru Kumara and Dilshan Madushanka are set to make their comeback to the squad after recovering from their respective injuries.

The publication also revealed Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad, with an interesting inclusion of both Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera. Despite their loss to India in the Asia Cup final, Dasun Shanaka has retained his position as the team’s captain.

Mir’s recent performances in the Vitality Blast 2023 for Worcestershire were noteworthy, as he claimed an impressive 19 wickets in just 11 matches, showcasing his skills with a commendable economy rate of 7.29.

In the previous draft for The Hundred held on March 23, Welsh Fire acquired the services of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, with Afridi having a reserve price of £100,000 and Rauf at £60,000.

Wanindu Hasaranga became the first player in the history of the Sri Lankan Premier League to score his first hat-trick in the tournament against the Colombo Stars. In the opening match of the Sri Lankan Premier League, Kandy Falcons scored 199 runs for the loss of one wicket.

Pathum Nishanka and Andre Fletcher put on an opening stand of 156 runs. Andre Fletcher scored 107 off 67 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes. Wanindu Hasaranga has regained the top spot among T20I bowlers, replacing Rashid Khan, after a successful T20 World Cup, where he picked up 15 wickets in eight matches.

Hasaranga picked up three-wicket hauls three times in the tournament. His 3 for 8 against UAE and 3 for 28 against Netherlands ensured Sri Lanka turned their first-round campaign around after an opening loss to Namibia to enter the Super 12s. He then picked up 3 for 13 against Afghanistan in the Super 12s.

The last time Hasaranga was at the top of the bowling rankings was in November 2021; he finished the previous calendar year as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the format. The Zimbabwe duo of Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza made gains among T20I allrounders. While Raza switched places with Moeen Ali – now sixth – to move to No. 4, and Williams entered the top ten in ninth place.

RCB’s Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera will not be available for IPL 2021 playoffs

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has granted permission to Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera to take part in the UAE-leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have roped in Hasaranga and Chameera as replacements for Adam Zampa and Daniel Sams respectively for the remainder of IPL 2021.

“The permission for the players was granted by the SLC in consultation with the Technical Advisory Committee,” SLC said in a statement. “The ‘No Objection Certificate’ to the duo was issued for them to join the IPL teams starting from 15th September (following the completion of the South Africa Tour of Sri Lanka),” it added.

The two Sri Lankan players will be a part of the IPL only till October 10, the date on which Qualifier 1 is scheduled to take place. They will leave RCB and join their national squad to play in the warm-up matches of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 after October 10.

The 14th season of IPL, which was postponed in May this year due to multiple cases of COVID-19 in the bio-bubble, will resume on September 19 in Dubai with a blockbuster clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and defending champion Mumbai Indians (MI).

The action will then shift to Abu Dhabi where Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will square off against Virat Kohli’s RCB.

Sharjah will host its first game on September 24 when RCB takes on the MS Dhoni-led CSK.

In all, 13 matches will be held in Dubai, 10 in Sharjah and 8 in Abu Dhabi.
