Australia Unveils Lineup for Highly Anticipated Boxing Day Test Showdown with Pakistan

The reigning champions of ICC World Test Cricket, Australia, are opting for stability in their squad after a commanding 360-run victory over Pakistan in Perth. The squad, which initially comprised 14 players, has been trimmed to 13 for the upcoming Boxing Day Test, with uncapped pacer Lance Morris making way for a return to domestic T20 duties in Australia.

Australia seems inclined to maintain the winning combination that delivered success in Perth, with the experienced trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and captain Pat Cummins likely to retain their roles in sharing the new-ball duties. Local fast bowler Scott Boland stands as the lone remaining seam option in the 13-player squad.

All-rounder Cameron Green retains his spot in the squad and while Cummins acknowledges his presence, he believes it will be challenging to make any changes to the lineup that displayed dominance in Perth.

“I don’t think injuries are going to be an issue, so I dare say there will be a pretty similar line-up at this stage,”

Cummins stated regarding the anticipated XI for the Boxing Day Test. He further added:

“I think all the bowlers are pretty fresh after (the win in Perth). It’s basically the ideal start to the summer.”

Star batter Marnus Labuschagne, who faced a finger injury in the opening Test against Pakistan, has been cleared of any serious damage and is expected to maintain his place in the lineup for the Melbourne Test.

Currently occupying fifth position in the World Test Championship standings with a win-loss percentage of 41.67, Australia is gearing up to face Pakistan, who share the top position with India at a 66.67 percentage.

Australia Dominates as Warner’s Century Pressures Pakistan

David Warner, 37, put any doubts about his test match skills to rest on Thursday by scoring a powerful 164 runs against Pakistan’s bowlers. Australia reached 346-5 after 84 overs at the end of the first day of the series opener in Perth. Warner, who plans to retire after the third game in Sydney, teamed up with Usman Khawaja (41) for a solid 126-run opening partnership after winning the toss. Warner reached his 26th test century in the 43rd over with a delightful upper cut for four, celebrating with his trademark leap and blowing a kiss towards the media box.

“It’s my job to come out here and score runs, that was from the get-go to put pressure on the Pakistani bowlers,” Warner, who had averaged only 32 in tests since the start of 2020, told Fox Cricket.

“There’s going to be criticism but you’ve got to take that. There’s no better way to silence them (than) by putting runs on the board.”

The world test champions had a strong start, with Shaheen Afridi’s opening over signaling a tough session for the visitors.

Khawaja, wearing a black armband due to ICC rules, fell first after lunch, caught behind by Sarfaraz Ahmed off Afridi (1-75).

Soon after, Marnus Labuschagne (16) was out lbw to medium-pacer Faheem Ashraf (1-65). Warner then adjusted his approach, toning down his attacking style, but not before showcasing an audacious lap shot for six.

Despite surviving a dropped catch and a mis-stumping, Warner capitalized on opportunities, hitting 16 boundaries and four sixes. He eventually miscued against debutant quick Aamer Jamal (2-63) in the 75th over.

Warner, now Australia’s fifth-highest run-scorer in tests with 8651, surpassed Matthew Hayden (8625) and Michael Clarke (8643) during his 211-ball innings.

Pakistan showed promise with disciplined post-lunch bowling, raising hopes of limiting Australia to under 400 on day two. The innings will resume with Mitchell Marsh (15 not out) and Alex Carey (14 not out).

BCCI Reveals India’s Test Series Schedule Against England Post-2023 ODI World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has disclosed the itinerary for India’s forthcoming five-match Test series against England, slated to take place after the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Test series will kick off in January of the following year.

India will resume their campaign in the third cycle of the World Test Championship as they go head-to-head against England in a riveting five-match Test series.

The series will commence on January 25, 2024, with the first match taking place in Hyderabad. On February 2, the action will shift to Vizag for the second match. Rajkot will host the third match of the series on February 15. The fourth match will commence on February 23 in Ranchi. Finally, the fifth and ultimate match of the Test series will unfold in Dharamsala on March 7, 2024.

West Indies announced the squad for the series against Zimbabwe

The West Indies have announced the squad ahead of the two-Test series in Zimbabwe. Jayden Seales is not in the squad against the Rhodesians due to injury. Shannon Gabriel has been called up instead. Gudakesh Moti and Jomel Warricane have also been included in the team.

At present, he is trying his best to recover. Anderson Phillips has been ruled out due to injury. Shamarh Brooks has been dropped from the team.

Shannon Gabriel last played a Test in the West Indies against Sri Lanka in November 2021. The star performed well in the Superfitty Cup last year. Like Gabriel, Warrican also played his last Test against Sri Lanka.

Australia beat South Africa to win the series

Australia defeated South Africa by a significant margin in the Boxing Day Test. On the fourth day of the Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Ajira won by an innings and 182 runs. As a result of this victory, Australia won the series with a 2-0 lead. South Africa was bowled out for 189 in the first innings.

In reply, Australia declared their first innings at 575 for 8 wickets. The Proteas finished the third day with 15 runs for 1 wicket yesterday. South Africa came out to bat 371 runs behind Australia on the fourth day. However, they could not go far in the second innings, they were bundled out for 204 runs. As a result, Dean Elgar’s team lost by an inning and 182 runs.

Temba Bavuma scored 65 runs in the second innings. 33 runs came from Kyle Verreynne’s bat. De Bruyn scored 28 and Sarel RV scored 21 runs. Australian spinner Nathan Lyon took three wickets. Scott Boland took two wickets. David Warner, who scored a double century in the 100th Test, became the man of the match.

It is to be noted that Australia won the first Test of the three-match series by 6 wickets. The third and final Test of the series will begin in Sydney on January 4.

Coach Gary Stead pinpointed Mitchell’s ‘versatility’ as a valuable aspect

Conway, who will miss the T20 World Cup final against Australia, suffered the self-inflicted injury when he thumped his bat after being dismissed in the semi-final against England.

Mitchell has played five Tests since making his debut in 2019 and made his maiden century against Pakistan in Christchurch in January.

“It’s a shame for Devon to miss out on the first series of the new World Test Championship cycle, but it also offers up an opportunity for someone else,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “Daryl’s versatility means he can cover a lot of batting positions and he’s certainly got plenty of confidence at the moment.

“He’s proven he can perform in Test cricket and I know he’s excited to rejoin the Test group.”

Conway’s first chance to return to the line-up will come against Bangladesh in early January when they tour New Zealand for two Tests. He has made a remarkable start to his Test career with a double century on debut against England at Lord’s in June which he followed with 80 in the second Test and another half-century in the World Test Championship final against India.

New Zealand will need to decide who replaces him at the top of the order for the two matches in Kanpur and Mumbai. Will Young could be the likely candidate although the uncapped Rachin Ravindra may also be considered as he would provide another spin option.

New Zealand travel to India on Monday, the day after the T20 World Cup final, with the opening T20I of the tour on Wednesday in Jaipur. Conway will travel to India with the squad before returning home with the T20 cohort following the three-game series. Players are still required to go through managed isolation when they return home.
