Babar Azam climbs higher in ICC Test batsmen rankings

In the most recent update of the ICC Test batsmen rankings, Babar Azam has made a significant leap to claim the fourth position after the conclusion of a one-off Test match between England and Ireland.

Despite Joe Root’s commendable performance in the match, scoring 56 runs in a single inning, he experienced a slight decline in his rating points. Root’s rating points decreased from 871 to 861, causing him to slide to the fifth position in the rankings. Meanwhile, Babar Azam surpassed Root with 862 rating points, solidifying his position as the fourth-ranked batsman in the ICC Test rankings.

The match also saw notable improvements in rankings for other players. Ollie Pope, who achieved a double century, rose 10 places to 23rd position with a rating of 637, while Ben Duckett, who also scored a century, climbed eight spots to reach 34th position with a rating of 602.

Ireland displayed resilience with the bat, leading to several players making significant jumps in their rankings. Andy McBrine’s unbeaten 86 propelled him 28 places higher to 282 points, while Mark Adair’s 88 (76*) resulted in a climb of 32 spots.

As the focus shifts to the World Test Championship Final at The Oval, the top-ranked Test players in each discipline are expected to participate, along with several players poised to ascend higher in the rankings.

Marnus Labuschagne from Australia enters the winner-takes-all showdown as the top-ranked batter in the world, while his teammate Steve Smith holds the third position, trailing Labuschagne by 43 rating points with a total of 915.

Usman Khawaja’s rise in Test rankings

Australia’s star batsman Usman Khawaja has improved in the Test rankings. Australia captain Pat Cummins declared the innings with him unbeaten on 195 in the rain-affected Sydney Test. Although he missed out on the first double-century of his career, Usman Khawaja has improved in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday.

Usman Khawaja has moved up four places to eight in the test batsmen’s rankings. His teammate Marnus Labuschagne retained the top spot. Liton Das of Bangladesh has dropped one step back to number 12. Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel has moved up 20 places due to his century in the first Test of his career against New Zealand.

Cummins is at the top of the test bowlers’ rankings as usual. Josh Hazlewood, another Aussie pacer who took five wickets in the Sydney Test, has moved up six places to number 10.

India’s Virat Kohli has moved up two places to six in the list of ODI batsmen due to his match-winning century against Sri Lanka. His teammate Rohit Sharma (8) has taken a step forward. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka (61), who scored a century in the same match, has moved up 20 steps. Pakistan captain Babar Azam retained the top spot.

India’s Suryakumar Yadav is at the top of the T20 batsmen’s rankings. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan has retained the top position in the list of all-rounders. Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan has climbed to the top of the bowlers’ rankings by ousting Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga.

Shakib overtakes Holder-Ashwin in Tests

Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan was once the top all-rounder in all three versions of cricket. But at present, he has been able to maintain the top spot only in ODIs. However, it is a matter of hope that Shakib is a regular in all three formats, he is also improving in the rankings. He has moved up two places in the latest ICC Test all-rounder rankings.

Shakib is now second in the Test all-rounder rankings, overtaking India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and West Indies’ Jason Holder. Only another India all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, is in front of Shakib. Ashwin and Holder have been relegated to Shakib’s progress. Ashwin is now on three while Holder is at four.

In the Antigua Test against West Indies, Bangladesh lost by 7 wickets but captain Shakib was brilliant. He played more than 50 innings both the innings with the bat and saved the team from shame. He was also effective with the ball in the first innings.
