Shardul Thakur could be released by Delhi Capitals

With about 20 days left for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises to release the players, the speculation is rife over the players who are on set to be let go and the biggest of them is Shardul Thakur. The Indian all-rounder, who is currently in Australia with the World Cup contingent, albeit in an unofficial capacity, is likely to be released by the Delhi Capitals franchise.

Having been bought for Rs 10.75 crore by the Capitals, Thakur’s performance may not have exactly met the requirement of value for money. He scored only 120 runs in 14 games he played last season and although he bagged 15 wickets, the 31-year-old had an economy rate of close to 10 with an average of 31.5. While he was one of the star performers for his previous franchise, Chennai Super Kings, he was a tad under par in his maiden season for the Capitals.

It is reported that Thakur could be released by the Delhi franchise which may try to buy him back for a lesser price. Along with Thakur, wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat and batter Mandeep Singh may also be released. The two were bought for Rs 2 crore and Rs 1.10 core respectively at the last auction.

With skipper Rishabh Pant keeping the wickets, Andhra’s Bharat, who is considered one of the best ‘keepers in the country, could not find a spot in the playing XI. Meanwhile, Mandeep, with only 18 runs in three games, may not have given his chances a great favor.
The teams have till November 15 to inform the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the players they intend to release. As previously reported by Cricbuzz, the auction is likely to be held on December 16 with either Istanbul in Turkey or Bengaluru being the venue. There has not been much activity in the trade window which has been open since the IPL ended.

Thakur in the wickets as India cruise to ODI series win v Zimbabwe

Seamer Shardul Thakur took 3-38 as India completed a five-wicket win over Zimbabwe to claim victory in their three-match One-Day International series with a game to spare at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday.

After electing to bowl, India dismissed the home side for 161 before chasing down their target with 24.2 overs remaining in another comfortable win to follow Thursday’s victory by 10 wickets at the same venue. All six Indian bowlers took wickets, but it was Thakur who stood out as he dismissed opener Innocent Kaia (16), captain Regis Chakabva (2), and Luke Jongwe (6) with some excellent swing bowling.
Sean Williams was the top scorer for Zimbabwe with a run-a-ball 42, while Ryan Burl was left stranded not out on 39 at the end of the innings.

“Early on it was a little on the slower side, but later we could bowl more bouncers,” Thakur said. “What I can improve on is to guess where the batsman is going to attack me and bowl accordingly. “I think I have good skillsets, so I just need to keep polishing those in the nets. Sometimes you just need to hit the deck hard and keep it tight.”

India lost captain KL Rahul (1) early in their reply, while the heroes from the first game, Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill, both scored 33 but could not repeat their unbeaten half-centuries from two days earlier. Deepak Hooda (25) and Sanju Samson (43 not out) put on 56 for the fifth wicket to see India within sight of their target.

The third and final ODI will be played at the same venue on Monday.

ENG vs IND: Shardul Thakur opens up after breaking Ian Botham’s record in Oval Test

Shardul Thakur emerged as a hero for Team India on Day 1 of the ongoing fourth Test against England at Kennington Oval in London.

Thakur walked in to bat when the visitors had lost six wickets for just 117 runs. Soon India lost only other recognised batter, Rishabh Pant, to go seven down for 127 runs. However, Thakur went for the counter-attack and thrashed English bowlers all around the park to take India’s total to the 191-run mark.

The 29-year-old scored a remarkable 57 off just 36 deliveries with the help of seven fours and three humungous sixes. During his sensational batting display, Thakur accomplished a very special milestone as well.

The Palghar-born reached his half-century off 31 balls and broke the record of legendary England all-rounder Ian Botham, who had smashed the fifty from 32 deliveries. Upon returning to the change room, Thakur didn’t just get appreciation from his teammates for the magnificent batting effort but also got teased for surpassing the record of Botham.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the host broadcaster, Thakur, revealed that he wasn’t aware of Botham’s record. He said his teammates tease him with Botham’s name, but it feels good to be compared with England great.

“I was not aware of it (breaking Ian Botham’s record). But it’s always good to score important runs for the team. Yes, these guys are teasing me with his name. But I think it’s good to be compared with the greats of the game,” said Thakur.

The Mumbaikar also shared thoughts on his counter-attack batting display, stating there is no right way of scoring runs as one needs to put runs on the board irrespective of how they come. Thakur said he was connecting the ball well, and that’s why he kept on going for it.

“When Rishabh got out, it was important for me to play such an innings. There are two ways, either you can be patient and bank on the partner to score runs or go and hit it. But at the end of the day, you have to score the runs. I think there is no right way of scoring runs. Runs are runs. Today was a day where I could connect properly. So I kept going for the runs,” added Thakur.
