Maxwell is focused on winning a second T20 World Cup for Australia in the upcoming tournament in the United States and the West Indies. After a week of rest from India, he is ready to lead the Melbourne Stars in the opening match of the Big Bash League against Brisbane at the Gabba on Thursday night. At 35 years old, Maxwell, set to rejoin the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the next IPL season, aims to share IPL experience with more Australians. He hopes this exposure will benefit the national team as they get ready for the T20 World Cup in June.

“The IPL will probably be the last tournament I ever play, as I will play the IPL until I can’t walk anymore,” Maxwell said at Melbourne Airport on Wednesday.

“I was talking about how good the IPL has been to me throughout my career; the people I’ve met, the coaches I have played under, the international players that you get to rub shoulders with, how beneficial to my whole career that tournament has been,”

“You’re rubbing shoulders with AB [de Villiers] and Virat [Kohli] for two months, talking to them while watching other games. It’s just the greatest learning experience that any player could ask for. Hopefully a lot of our Australian players can get over to the IPL and get to work in slightly similar conditions to the West Indies, where it is a little bit drier, it will spin” he added.

In early 2025, Australia will compete against Sri Lanka in the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy. Winning this trophy is essential for Australia as it will determine their qualification for the World Test Championship final later in the year.

“I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions,” Maxwell said.

“There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side,”

“I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage,”

Meanwhile, Maxwell avoided getting involved in the dispute between Mitchell Johnson and David Warner. Instead, he chose to give a positive endorsement for his fellow World Cup winner.

“I’m not going to throw my name into some headlines about this,” Maxwell said.

“But Davey’s been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I’m looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer,” he added.

In the second unfortunate incident in less than a year, Glenn Maxwell’s participation in Australia’s World Cup match against England has been ruled out after a mishap involving a moving golf cart. Maxwell sustained concussion and facial bruising when he lost his grip while standing on the back of the cart in the dark following a round at Kalhaar Blues and Greens golf club in Ahmedabad. Fortunately, no one else was injured in the incident.

Australian players and coaches were taking a break following their victory over New Zealand in Dharamsala. Due to Cricket Australia’s concussion protocols, Maxwell will miss the clash against their Ashes rivals at the Narendra Modi Stadium. While there won’t be a replacement in the squad, Australia are hopeful that Maxwell will only miss one game.

The incident follows Maxwell’s leg injury at a birthday party in Melbourne last November, an injury he is still recovering from. Notably, Australia’s previous World Cup campaign was also marred by a golf accident involving wicketkeeper Josh Inglis.

“Glenn and a few other players jumped on the back of carts, and unfortunately on the way back to the team bus, he lost his grip and sustained that injury,” said coach Andrew McDonald.

It was only an obvious accident. He’s a key member of our team, so ideally he’ll miss just one game.

Despite the setback, Maxwell remains in good spirits and is expected to continue training. However, concussion injuries require mandatory periods of recuperation. Maxwell is anticipated that Maxwell will be back for Australia’s match against Afghanistan in Mumbai, their second-to-last group-stage game before the semi-finals.

Marcus Stoinis is the likely replacement, having recovered from a calf niggle. Cameron Green is also an option, and McDonald mentioned the possibility of moving Mitch Marsh down the order. Travis Head is set to take on a larger role with the ball in Maxwell’s absence, as Maxwell’s off-spin has been a crucial asset for the team.

Marnus Labuschagne, who has been working on his off-spin along with his leg-spin, is expected to maintain his place in the lineup. There may be competition between him and Stoinis when Maxwell returns.

McDonald said, “We have Marnus who can do some spinning, and we’ll be looking at Travis to take some tempo out of the game (with the ball).
