Virat Kohli is the highest run-scorer of all time in the T20 World Cup. The Indian batsman has made this unique record by beating Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene.

In the previous match against South Africa, Kohli scored 12 runs in 11 balls with two fours. With this run, Kohli became the second batsman after Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene to reach the milestone of 1000 runs in the T20 World Cup.

Kohli needed only 16 runs to leave the Sri Lankan great. Playing against Bangladesh, he overtook Mahela in just 13 balls.

Kohli also holds the record for the most number of half-centuries in the T20 World Cup with 13. Chris Gayle and Rohit Sharma scored nine half-centuries each. Meanwhile, Kohli is also the world’s top run-scorer with 3932 runs in 113 matches in International T20.

Kohli scored 185 runs in the first World Cup in 2012. He was the top batsman in 2014 and the second-best batsman in 2016. He was the best player of the tournament in both tournaments, becoming the only male cricketer to win the award twice. In addition, he also holds the most six players of the match awards in the World Cup.

Jayawardene steps down as coach and gets bigger role at IPL’s Mumbai Indians

Mahela Jayawardene will step down as Mumbai Indians head coach and take on a bigger role at the franchise due to its increasing international presence, the Indian Premier League side said on Wednesday.

Mumbai’s owners recently purchased teams in the International League T20 based in the United Arab Emirates, and the Cape Town side in a new league in South Africa.

Former Sri Lanka captain Jayawardene will become global head of performance, Mumbai said in a statement. “With the expansion of MI #OneFamily which now includes the MI Emirates and MI Cape Town along with Mumbai Indians, the team management recognized the need for a central team,” the team said.

“As part of building the structure, two MI veterans Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan with deep knowledge of the MI value system and proven track record, are being elevated to new roles.” Led by India captain Rohit Sharma, Mumbai is one of the most successful teams in the IPL, winning the tournament five times.

In his new role, Jayawardene will work closely with each of the head coaches to make sure the three teams play a consistent brand of cricket. Former India fast bowler Zaheer has been elevated to global head of cricket development from his previous position as director of cricket operations and will look after the franchise’s scouting and talent development.

Mahela Jayawardene, Shaun Pollock and Janette Brittin inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

Mahela Jayawardene, Shaun Pollock and Janette Brittin have been inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021 final in Dubai on Sunday. The trio will be formally inducted by fellow ICC Hall of Famer Sir Clive Lloyd.

“The ICC Cricket Hall of Fame is our way of honouring and celebrating the greats of our game. Only the very best players are recognized for their contribution to cricket in this way,” ICC acting CEO Geoff Allardice said in a statement.

“I would like to congratulate Mahela and Shaun on their induction into this illustrious group and it is a wonderful way to commemorate Janette’s life and career.”

Jayawardene, who retired as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest ever players, was a key member of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2014 and reached the four other major ICC finals. Pollock, on the other hand, was one of the finest all-rounders South Africa has ever produced. He was the first player to achieve the double of 3,000 runs and 300 wickets in both Test and ODI cricket.

Brittin, who died in 2017, was a mainstay of the England Test team for 19 years, helping pave the way for women’s cricket from 1979 to 1998. She was the oldest woman to score a Test hundred (at 39 years and 38 days vs Australia in 1998) and the second-oldest to score an ODI hundred (at 38 years and 161 days vs Pakistan in 1997).

Brittin also scored the most Test runs in a calendar year (531 in 1984) and has the most 50-plus scores (16) in women’s Tests. She even top-scored in the 1993 World Cup final against New Zealand to take England to the title.
