When South African spinner Keshav Maharaj suffered a devastating Achilles tendon injury during a Test match celebration against the West Indies in Johannesburg, his World Cup aspirations seemed bleak. “After I came out of surgery, I said I must give myself every chance, but when you see how slow the initial phases of rehab are, you have negative thoughts,” he shared with reporters.

Determination and Sacrifice

Despite the initial setbacks, Maharaj’s determination shone through. He worked tirelessly with his medical team, making significant sacrifices in his diet, rehab efforts, and recovery routines. Sleep was prioritized, with eight to 10 hours of rest each night.

“I might not have got there, but it was about giving yourself the best chance to get back to a place where you feel you belong,” he emphasized.

A Motivated Return to Roots

For Maharaj, the motivation to recover and excel in the World Cup came from a deep sense of connection. His forefathers hail from India, and he aspired to make a meaningful contribution for his country in the land of his ancestors.

“My forefathers are from India, so I want to go back there and try to do something special for my country. That was the motivation that I needed,” he explained.

Embracing the Challenge

Maharaj’s return to the cricket field in the 50-over format was a rigorous test of his physical endurance. Despite the challenges, he welcomed the opportunity to push his limits and continually challenge himself.

“The 50-over format is very hard on the body, but that’s something I wanted to experience. I always like to challenge myself,” he affirmed.

From Moon Boot to World Cup Dream

Four months post-surgery, Maharaj was still navigating the recovery process while wearing a ‘moon boot.’ However, at five months, he began running again, and that’s when his dream of playing in the World Cup started to feel like a tangible reality.

Contributing to South Africa's Success

Maharaj’s determination paid off when he played a pivotal role in South Africa’s 111-run victory over Australia in Potchefstroom, reducing their series deficit to 2-1. He highlighted the importance of executing his skills effectively.

“There’s obviously some room for improvement, but it’s building up towards something. The main thing is that I can execute my skills,” he added.

The journey continues as the fourth ODI unfolds in Pretoria on Friday, marking another chapter in Maharaj’s remarkable comeback story.

In a recent development, Durban Super Giants, the sister franchise of Lucknow Super Giants owned by the Goenka Group, has announced Keshav Maharaj as their new captain for the upcoming second edition of the SA20 tournament.

Quinton de Kock, who captained the Super Giants in the inaugural edition, couldn’t lead the team to a satisfactory performance, resulting in a fifth-place finish on the points table and missing out on the playoffs.

The Durban franchise took to social media to officially reveal Keshav Maharaj as the player entrusted with the leadership responsibilities for the forthcoming season.

Keshav Maharaj’s T20I career for South Africa spans 25 matches, where he has contributed 69 runs and claimed 22 wickets. His bowling performances have been commendable with an average of 27.5 and an economy rate of 7.22.

However, his performance in the previous SA20 tournament fell short of expectations, as he managed only 34 runs and four wickets in 10 matches.

The decision to appoint Maharaj as captain could be attributed to Quinton de Kock’s need for more freedom to focus on his batting, as leadership does not come naturally to him.

On the other hand, Maharaj has displayed his leadership skills in the limited opportunities he has had while captaining the South Africa team.

Quinton de Kock had a remarkable performance in the 2023 SA20, emerging as the fifth leading run-scorer. He amassed 271 runs in 10 matches at an average of 30.11 and an impressive strike rate of 151.39.

Additionally, Heinrich Klaasen played a pivotal role in the Durban Super Giants’ SA20 campaign, accumulating 363 runs in 10 matches with a strike rate of approximately 165. He finished the tournament as the fourth-highest run-getter.
