India’s cricket board amassed a surplus of approximately $1.5 billion over the five-year span leading up to 2021-22, as the nation’s parliament received a rare glimpse into the financial affairs of the sporting entity.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has customarily refrained from disclosing extensive financial information. Nonetheless, it is recognized as one of the most financially prosperous governing bodies worldwide, owing to India’s ardent passion for cricket and the periodic competitive bidding for broadcasting privileges.

In parliament on Tuesday, a government minister shared recent BCCI earnings, which unveiled revenues of $919 million against expenditures of $370 million for the fiscal year concluding in March 2022. This yielded a surplus of $549 million. Remarkably, this fiscal year marked the board’s highest surplus over the five-year period commencing from 2017-18, wherein earnings reached $3.3 billion and expenses stood at $1.8 billion.

The commanding influence of the BCCI within global cricket circles is frequently attributed to its substantial wealth, surpassing that of other national cricket boards. Furthermore, the BCCI is set to amass approximately $230 million annually from 2024 to 2027—equating to 38.5% of the International Cricket Council’s annual earnings amounting to $600 million, as per ESPN Cricinfo.

In the previous year, the BCCI secured an astounding $6.2 billion from the sale of media rights for the immensely popular Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament.

Presently, the board has floated a tender for media rights concerning its international and domestic matches, which is projected to yield another substantial windfall.

According to a PTI report, the CAB urged the ICC recce team to change the World Cup match’s date between Pakistan and England from November 12 to November 11, coinciding with Kali Puja, citing law-and-order concerns.

If the BCCI and ICC decide to accommodate this change, Pakistan will face its third schedule alteration.

ESPNcricinfo mentioned that CAB officials held a meeting with city police authorities and were apprised of the law-and-order issues during the festival. Subsequently, the association sent a request to Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, seeking the date change.

Previously, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reportedly agreed with the ICC and BCCI on rescheduling two of its World Cup matches.

The high-profile India-Pakistan clash, originally scheduled for October 15, will now be played on October 14 in Ahmedabad. The change was necessitated due to security deployment concerns on the first day of Navratri festival.

Additionally, Pakistan will face Sri Lanka on October 10 in Hyderabad instead of October 12, allowing a three-day gap before the India match.

The revised India-Pakistan date is likely to impact other games and teams, including a potential shift for the Afghanistan-England match to October 13. The schedule adjustments, coming just two months before the ODI World Cup, further contribute to the already delayed original schedule.

BCCI President Roger Binny and NCA Head VVS Laxman are scheduled to have a discussion with Harmanpreet Kaur regarding her inappropriate conduct during and after the third ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur. Jay Shah, the board secretary, revealed this on Thursday.

Harmanpreet, the captain of the Indian women’s team, will be questioned about her outburst over umpiring decisions in Dhaka during the game. The ICC had already imposed sanctions on her match fees and handed her a two-match suspension for breaching its mandatory code of conduct for players.

During the intense third series-deciding fixture, Harmanpreet displayed her frustration by hitting the stumps with her bat in protest of an LBW decision against her. She also gave the umpire a disapproving look and gestured, claiming she had edged the ball.

At the presentation ceremony, Harmanpreet openly criticized the umpiring, referring to it as “pathetic.” Additionally, she asked the Bangladesh captain, Nigar Sultana, to include the umpires in the team photograph, implying that she felt the umpires favored the opposition.

Her actions portrayed her as a sore loser and detracted from her ability to handle emotions and results as a captain on the international stage.

To address the situation and remind Harmanpreet of the necessary conduct expected at this level of cricket, BCCI’s top officials, Binny and Laxman, will have a conversation with her. Both Binny and Laxman are former India players known for their exemplary on-field conduct.

BCCI will not be appealing against the ban imposed on Harmanpreet, resulting in her exclusion from India’s initial knockout matches in the upcoming Asian Games women’s T20I event in China this September.

Shah confirmed, “We will have our President Roger Binny and VVS Laxman speak to her (regarding her behavior). The ICC has already banned her, and the time to appeal against the decision has already passed,” as stated during the press briefing.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the date for the highly anticipated India versus Pakistan match at the Cricket World Cup will be changed, but the venue will remain in Ahmedabad. The decision comes after concerns were raised that the original date, October 15, coincided with the first day of Navratri, a significant festival celebrated with great enthusiasm in Gujarat.

Due to the mass participation in garba nights during Navratri, security agencies advised the BCCI to revise the schedule. The Narendra Modi Stadium, with a capacity of nearly 1 lakh, was initially selected to host four marquee games, including the India-Pakistan clash, the tournament opener between New Zealand and England, England vs Australia, and the final. The event will take place in 10 cities, with the semifinals scheduled for Mumbai and Kolkata.

Shah stated that several ICC full members had raised objections to the original World Cup schedule, prompting the need for revisions. While not disclosing the names of the member boards, Shah clarified that the changes would only accommodate requests from member nations and are not related to security threats.

“We are just trying to change the date and time of matches while retaining the venues. Things will be sorted out in two or three days,” he added.

In addition to the scheduling changes, Shah announced that the BCCI will not appeal against Harmanpreet Kaur’s ban, imposed for her outburst during a recent series against Bangladesh. Kaur will be questioned by BCCI President Roger Binny and NCA head VVS Laxman regarding the incident during the third ODI against Bangladesh.

Shah also provided reassurance that ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is “100 percent fit” and could travel to Ireland. Moreover, it was revealed that England A will tour India while India A will visit South Africa A in the upcoming year.

Mohammad Siraj has been released from Team India’s ODI squad ahead of the three-match series against the West Indies.

The right-arm pacer has developed a sore ankle, and the BCCI medical team has advised him to take rest as a precautionary measure.

No replacement player has been called for the ODI series, which is set to begin on July 27, 2023, in Barbados.
