Australian star Aaron Finch said goodbye to ONE-day cricket late last year. This time the World Cup-winning captain has also said goodbye to T20 cricket. The 36-year-old batsman will never be seen playing for Australia again as he has not played Tests, or left international T20.

Finch announced his retirement at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Tuesday. Cricket Australia will have to find a new captain as the batsman has left T20 cricket. Finch has led Australia in 76 T20 Matches. Earlier, Pat Cummins was made the captain of that format after leaving the ODIs. Now it remains to be seen who comes to lead the T20.

Finch made his T20I debut for Australia against England in 2011. He has scored 3120 runs at an average of 34.29 in 103 T20 matches in a career of almost a decade. Strike rate 142.53. His innings of 172 against Zimbabwe is the highest individual innings in the history of international T20 cricket. He also has innings of 156 runs against England. In addition to two centuries in T20, Finch has 19 half-centuries.

Under Finch, Australia won the 2021 T20 World Cup title. This is the only title of The Aussies in T20. Finch also used to bat destructively in ODIs. He scored 5406 runs in 17 centuries in 146 ODIs. He also played five Tests for Australia.

Harshal Patel scored 37 runs in one over in IPL 2021. The Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer scored 37 runs in an over against Chennai Super Kings. Ravindra Jadeja was batting for Chennai. Australia win toss and bowl as big guns return to lead attack

As he did in his team’s eight-run loss in the opener in Perth, captain Aaron Finch decided to field but will be hoping his returning star bowlers can restrict an in-form England batting order which compiled a record 208 for 6 in game one – the highest T20I total by an overseas team in Australia.

The home side has recalled star quicks Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, while spinner Adam Zampa is back. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell also returns from rest and replaces emerging all-rounder Cameron Green, who is not part of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad.

Steve Smith, who was dropped for the series opener, has been once again left out, while Finch will return to his customary role as opener after a stint at No.4. England has stuck with the same batting order with Alex Hales seemingly securing an opening berth after his destructive 84 at Optus Stadium. Quicks Chris Jordan and David Willey return from injuries and replace Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, who starred in Perth with 3 for 34 marked by rapid pace.

Australia has ready replacements for T20 skipper Finch: Hazlewood

Australia has experienced T20 players ready to slot in “seamlessly” in place of Captain Aaron Finch if required for the World Cup, paceman Josh Hazlewood said on Wednesday.

Under pressure and out of form with the bat, Finch’s place in the team is under scrutiny ahead of Australia’s World Cup title defense on home soil. Teammates and selector George Bailey have backed Finch to dig him out of his form slump and lead the team at the global tournament but Hazlewood stopped short of describing the opener’s captaincy as essential.

He asked how difficult it would be for Australia to have a new captain for the World Cup, Hazlewood said the team had senior players ready to step up. “All teams at the moment feel like they’re quite senior and there are a lot of guys who sort of taking the leadership upon themselves when they’re out there in the middle doing their chosen skill,” he told reporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

“There’s quite a lot of experience out there in the middle and I think it would be quite easy for the next captain to come in and just seamlessly transition.” Australia is already looking for a new ODI captain, with Finch having played his last match in the format against New Zealand over the weekend.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins has led the Test team since wicketkeeper Tim Paine stepped down last year but Hazlewood said Australia might want to look outside the quicks for a new white-ball captain. “With the quicks, we’re probably going to rest (from) white ball here and there so it’s not like, I guess, Patty with the Test matches playing every game,” Hazlewood said.

“That could create a reshuffle of captaincy and vice-captaincy all the time. “You probably want someone in there who’s stable and playing every game. It makes it a lot easier, I think.” While Cummins is favored to succeed Finch, Test vice Captain Steve Smith is also seen as a strong candidate.

David Warner also hopes to be considered for leadership positions, though he remains banned from them by Cricket Australia for his part in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal.

Australian captain Aaron Finch has suddenly announced his retirement from ODI cricket. There is speculation about who will be the next captain of the team in the upcoming ODI World Cup. However, the new captain prefers star opener, David Warner.

“I think Cricket Australia will think the same way as me,” Finch said. Warner is a cricketer under whom I have had the opportunity to play a few matches. Warner is great as a captain. Rarely have I seen such a tactical captain like him. I think everyone would love to play under his leadership.

Finch also said, “I am not 100 percent sure about Cricket Australia’s position. But I will be happy if they change position. But Warner is the kind of cricketer who can handle leadership duties with ease; well deserved.” However, Australian coach Andrew Macdonald does not want to think about captaincy in ODI cricket right now. He said,” T20 World Cup is ahead. That’s what matters now. After the World Cup, we will have time to think about the captain of the one-day team. We are very stressed about T20 World Cup. I don’t want to put more pressure on myself.”

Aaron Finch participated in 146 ODI matches for Australia and scored 5 thousand 406 runs with 17 centuries. Under his leadership, Australia participated in 55 matches, winning 31 and losing 24.

Aaron Finch on questions being raised about David Warner

After Australia’s maiden T20 World Cup triumph in Dubai on Sunday, captain Aaron Finch expressed surprise at some people writing off David Warner. According to Finch, the criticism of Warner was almost like “poking the bear”.

Warner had a key role to playing in Australia’s historic win in the UAE. He smashed 289 runs in seven matches and also slammed a crucial fifty in the final against New Zealand in Dubai. Chasing a challenging 173, Australia lost Finch cheaply. However, Warner and Mitchell Marsh (77* off 50) featured in a second-wicket stand of 92 to ease the Aussies towards victory in the title clash. The Aussies got over the finish line with seven balls to spare and eight wickets in hand.

At the post match press conference, Finch was all praise for Player of the Tournament Warner, who played key knocks right through the World Cup. The Australian captain said about Warner, “Can’t believe people wrote him off a couple of weeks ago, it was almost like poking the bear.”

The Aussie skipper described the win as a huge one for the team. He said, “This is huge, to be the first Australia team to do it. So proud of how the guys went about the campaign.”

Finch agreed that Australia’s crushing victory over Bangladesh in the Super 12 stage was the turning point of their campaign, coming as it did following their defeat at the hands of England. He added, “Certainly was, (our) backs were against the wall. We had to fight and certainly did that, had some great team and individual performances.”

The Australia captain named a number of other players like Adam Zampa, Marsh and Matthew Wade for playing important roles in the team’s win. Finch commented, “Adam Zampa is the player of the tournament for me. He controlled the game, got big wickets, super player. Mitch Marsh, what a way to start, put pressure on from the start. Matt Wade came in under an injury cloud and got the job done. He came in in the semi-final against Pakistan alongside Marcus Stoinis and did the business.”

Australia won the toss and bowled first against New Zealand. Kane Williamson’s 85 lifted the Kiwis to 172 for 4. However, the Aussies were never in any kind of trouble during the chase.

Aaron Finch admits pandemic threw Australia’s T20 World Cup plans out the window

Captain says Australia will “go with seven specialist batters, four specialist bowlers, plus the allrounders.”

Australia captain Aaron Finch admits that long-held plans for the 2020 version of the T20 World Cup “have gone out the window” as they are set to name just four specialist bowlers for their tournament opener against South Africa on Saturday.

Australia had made the 2020 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia, a priority back in 2018 with Finch, coach Justin Langer and Australia’s selectors developing a consistent five-specialist bowler strategy over the course of 12 months which saw them win four consecutive series and reach world No. 1 for the first time in May of 2020.

But with the tournament delayed by a year and moved to the UAE, Australia have lost their way losing four consecutive series and head into the World Cup ranked 7th. Finch admitted the Covid-19 pandemic did affect their long-term planning.

“Plans have sort of gone out the window recently but that’s part and parcel with what’s happened worldwide we’re fully understanding of that,” Finch said. “To be able to continue to put on a great show in world cricket, to go ahead in a pandemic and we’re very grateful for that”

Australia will not play with five specialist bowlers as they have done for most of the last two years. While Finch would not confirm which bowlers would be selected, he did state that allrounders Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis would all play together.

“We’ll go with seven specialist batters, four specialist bowlers, plus the allrounders,” Finch said. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in the depth of our squad. We’ve got a lot of confidence in Maxwell, Stoinis, and Marsh to be able to bowl their four overs as well.

“We think that on these wickets and in these conditions that they can do a really good job and be an attacking option as much as anything.”

That means if Australia picks their two specialist spinners in Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa, which appears highly likely, then only one of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, or Kane Richardson will play in support of Mitchell Starc.

Hazlewood did not play in either warm-up game after starring in Chennai Super Kings’ IPL triumph. Richardson bowled well in Australia’s warm-up win over New Zealand and is the only true death specialist while Cummins played only one warm-up game against India due to his late arrival in the UAE following the birth of his first child. It was his first game since the IPL was postponed in April and the Australia vice-captain admitted on Thursday that he could well be left out of the side during the tournament.

Australia’s desire for stronger batting is a clear sign of the concern over their opening duo. Warner’s lack of runs has been well documented, but Finch once again leapt to his defence.

“I’m backing Davey’s ability,” Finch said “I’m backing his judgment. I think if you look at his World Cup history, it’s just bloody good. So, would he have liked more runs, absolutely. Everyone would like more runs all the time but he’s one of the greatest players Australia’s ever produced and I’ve got no doubts that come game one he will be up and firing ready to go.”

The other elephant in the room is the form of Finch himself. He missed the recent tour of Bangladesh after requiring knee surgery and while his knee has fully recovered and is not a concern, his career T20 record in the UAE is far more worrying. In 22 career innings in the UAE in all T20s he averages 21.30 and strikes at 110. In five T20Is in the country he has made just 10 runs. He was dropped by Royal Challengers Bangalore during last year’s IPL and though he does have an outstanding T20I overall record that commands respect, he averages 20 runs fewer per dismissal in Asia and his strike-rate drops to 124 compared to 159 outside of Asia.

The opening combination of Finch and Warner is vital to Australia’s chances in the tournament, particularly given the importance of having a productive powerplay with the bat in the slower conditions.

“Even though it’s different surfaces to what the IPL used, we saw the impact that had,” Finch said. “The teams that won the powerplay, that went a long way to winning the game as the wickets deteriorated. I think the wickets first off in the tournament here will start out a little bit better, and probably be a little bit more consistent throughout the 40 overs. But as it gets a bit more traffic and the tournament gets a bit deeper, that might slow up and spin a little bit more. But, yeah, the powerplay is going to be crucial no doubt for both teams.”
