Following two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third match of the ICC Women’s Championship series against Bangladesh in Dhaka, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been handed a suspension for her team’s next two international matches.

For a Level 2 offense, Kaur was fined 50 per cent of her match fee and received three demerit points on her disciplinary record. The offense was related to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” (Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel). Additionally, she was fined 25 per cent of her match fee for a Level 1 offense, having breached Article 2.7 which pertains to “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”

The first incident occurred in the 34th over of India’s innings when Kaur expressed dissent by hitting the wickets with her bat after being declared caught at slip off spinner Nahida Akter. The second incident took place during the presentation ceremony when Kaur openly criticized the umpiring in the match.

Kaur accepted the charges and the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, thus avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

The on-field umpires, Tanvir Ahmed and Muhammad Kamruzzaman, along with third umpire Moniruzzamman and fourth umpire Ali Arman, brought forth the charges.

As a result of accumulating four demerit points, Kaur’s sanction amounts to two suspension points. Two suspension points lead to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes first for the player or player support personnel. Consequently, Kaur will be suspended from India’s upcoming matches.
