When Virat Kohli was India’s captain, former leg-spinner Anil Kumble was still in charge of the coach. However, the news that Kohli’s relationship with this legend was not going well has often come in the media. It was then that Sehwag got an offer to become India’s coach. Captain Kohli himself offered to coach Nawab of Najafgarh. According to him, he applied for the position of coach. But in the end, he respectfully returned the offer. When Anil Kumble’s job as coach was almost ripe, Kohli requested Sehwag to apply to become the coach. The then board secretary Amitabh Chowdhury also made the same request to Sehwag. This legend said, ‘If Virat Kohli and then BCCI secretary Amitabh Chowdhury had not requested me, I would not have applied. We had a meeting and he (Chowdhury) told me, something is not going well between Kohli and Kumble. We want you to take the responsibility of the coach.’

“They told us that Kumble’s contract will expire after the 2017 Champions Trophy and then you will be able to tour the West Indies with the team,” he added. But in the end, Sehwag was no longer the coach of the Indian team. Did not even go on the Caribbean tour with the team. In that context, he said, ‘I did not say anything yes or no. But I told them that, if I go to West Indies, I will take my coaching staff, assistant coach, and bowling, batting, and fielding coach with me. My choice of support staff is final. They did not agree to that. So I did not go with the team and did not accept the position of coach. But he has no regrets about not being able to coach India, just as he has no regrets about not being lucky enough to lead India. He said, ‘Not at all. I am happy with what I have achieved.’Sehwag added, ‘Having come from a small farming family in Najafgarh, I got an opportunity to play in the Indian team. I got immense love and appreciation from the fans and even if I was the captain of the Indian team I would have got the same amount of respect.’
