Pakistan is in the final stages of shaping their 15-member squad for the 2023 ICC World Cup, with Saud Shakeel likely securing a spot.

During the third ODI of the recently-concluded series against Afghanistan, Pakistan added Saud Shakeel to their 17-member Asia Cup squad, resulting in Tayyab Tahir’s omission from the equation.

Shakeel’s exceptional performance against spin bowlers is expected to work in his favor, especially since Pakistan will be competing on spin-friendly pitches in India.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faces a deadline of September 5 to confirm their 15-member World Cup squad and submit the names to the International Cricket Council (ICC). Consequently, it’s highly likely that two members from the current Asia Cup squad will be excluded.

After careful deliberations between selectors and team management, Abdullah Shafique appears to be at risk of not making the World Cup squad.

Selectors are also contemplating the exclusion of Faheem Ashraf from the squad, considering that Mohammad Wasim Jnr is already part of the team as a backup fast bowler who can contribute with valuable runs down the order.

It’s worth noting that squad adjustments can still be made until September 28th. However, any modifications beyond that date will require approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
