MCC Proposes Measures: Limited ODIs and Funds for Test Cricket Boost

In an effort to enhance the quality of the game and address various challenges, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has suggested implementing measures post-2027 World Cup. These measures include the restriction of one-day internationals (ODIs) and the establishment of a fund to support smaller nations in playing Test cricket.

The MCC, the guardian of cricket’s laws, recognizes the need for significant changes to safeguard the sport. They propose reducing the number of bilateral ODIs, except for the year leading up to each World Cup, with the intention of improving the quality of matches. Additionally, this would create valuable space in the international cricket calendar.

It’s important to note that these suggestions can only be implemented after the 2023-2027 cricket cycle.

While welcoming increased financial investment in the sport, the MCC’s World Cricket Committee (WCC) panel acknowledges the existing financial disparities among member nations. They express particular concern for the survival of Test cricket outside of cricketing powerhouses like India, Australia, and England.

To address this issue, the committee proposes conducting a financial audit to evaluate operational costs versus commercial returns. This audit would assist the International Cricket Council (ICC) in identifying nations requiring support to sustain their Test match programs. Consequently, the committee recommends the establishment of a dedicated Test fund to preserve the integrity of Test cricket.

Furthermore, the MCC’s WCC panel advocates for the creation of a strategic fund to promote the growth of women’s cricket.

Panel chairman Mike Gatting emphasizes the need for a reset in the global game of cricket. He asserts that immediate action must be taken to drive substantial transformations and protect the sport as a whole.
