Pieter made his debut for the Netherlands in 2006. He became the captain of the team in 2018. He has scored 322 runs in 56 one-day matches for the Netherlands. He took 55 wickets. Peter has scored 591 runs in 77 T20 matches. Peter has taken 58 wickets in T20Is. Peter last took the field in the first one-day match against England on June 17. In that match, England scored 498 runs, which is a world record in one-day cricket. Peter was not on the team in the second match due to back pain.

Scott Edwards will replace Pieter as captain of the Netherlands team. The 25-year-old wicketkeeper has long been one of the mainstays in the Netherlands batting line-up.

Pieter was also very successful as a captain. It was under him that the Dutch became the champions in the 2021 T20 World Cup qualifiers.
