In a remarkable comeback, New Zealand rebounded from their unexpected defeat against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to secure a 2-1 series victory by winning the third and final Twenty20 match in Dubai by 32 runs on Sunday.

Following the UAE’s commanding seven-wicket triumph on the previous day, registering their maiden victory over New Zealand in any format, the hosts struggled with a batting collapse, reaching 53/5 in their pursuit of 167 in the concluding encounter.

Aayan Afzal Khan, the 17-year-old who previously showcased his prowess with the ball in the second match, displayed determined resilience by contributing 42 runs off 36 balls. Nonetheless, the mounting required run rate eventually proved insurmountable for the UAE.

Ben Lister, New Zealand’s left-arm medium-pacer, shone with a bowling performance of 3/35, dismantling the wickets of UAE captain Muhammad Waseem and Aayan, while also executing a crucial run-out. These efforts restricted the UAE to a total of 134/7, well short of the target.

New Zealand’s innings was anchored by Will Young’s 56 and Mark Chapman’s consecutive half-century, with the latter scoring 51 runs. Their combined efforts steered New Zealand to a competitive total of 166/5 after opting to bat first.

Captain Tim Southee remarked, “It was a better innings from us. We were able to build a partnership there with Chapman and Will Young, so that was pleasing.” He also acknowledged the significance of early wickets in hindering the opposition’s momentum.

Junaid Siddique, UAE’s seamer, emerged as the standout bowler, taking 3/26 by dismissing key figures such as Young, Chapman, and opener Tim Seifert.

Looking ahead, Captain Southee revealed that New Zealand’s primary focus shifts towards their upcoming tour of England. The tour encompasses T20 and one-day internationals, strategically aligning with their preparation for the 50-over World Cup, scheduled to take place in India starting this October.
