Although Moeen had previously retired from the longest format of the game in September 2021, he has reportedly been approached by England captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum regarding a potential comeback to Test cricket.
Sources state that Moeen, who recently played for the Chennai Super Kings and contributed to their victories in the 2021 and 2023 Indian Premier League, has been given some time to make his decision.
Having made his Test debut in 2014, Moeen has accumulated 2,914 runs in 64 matches at an average of 28.29. He has also claimed 195 wickets with his off-spin.
With the injury to Leach adding to England’s bowling department woes leading up to the series, the team is actively searching for a replacement. Furthermore, fast bowler Jofra Archer has already been ruled out due to an elbow injury.
The Ashes series is set to commence at Edgbaston on June 16th.
