In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, Thirimanne expressed his gratitude to the sport, acknowledging that he had given his best effort and served his motherland with honesty and integrity. While he didn’t disclose all the reasons behind his decision, he mentioned that it was a challenging choice to make.
Throughout his career, Thirimanne garnered immense respect as one of Sri Lanka’s most prolific batsmen, particularly excelling in the 50-over format. He amassed a total of 3,194 runs in 106 innings at an impressive average of 34.71, which included four centuries and 24 half-centuries.
In March 2022, Thirimanne played his final international match for Sri Lanka, a Test against India held in Bengaluru. As he embarks on a new chapter in his life, he expressed his deep appreciation to the Sri Lanka Cricket members, coaches, teammates, physios, trainers, and analysts for their unwavering support and encouragement.
Taking to Instagram, Thirimanne bid farewell to his cricketing journey, describing it as an absolute honor to represent his country. He thanked everyone for the incredible memories and well wishes he received during his 13-year career, looking forward to what lies ahead in the future.
