Shubman Gill Fined for Expressing Displeasure with Umpire’s Decision on Social Media

Indian opener Shubman Gill faced a 15 percent match fee fine for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This penalty was imposed after Gill openly criticized the umpire’s decision regarding his dismissal.

The incident unfolded after the fourth day’s play when Gill voiced his dissatisfaction with the umpiring verdict on social media. Television umpire Richard Kettleborough had deemed that Cameron Green took a clean catch to dismiss Gill in the second innings. Later that day, Gill took to social media, seemingly questioning the accuracy of the decision.

In addition to the fine, the 23-year-old will also face a disciplinary action from the ICC for violating “article 2.7,” which pertains to public criticism or inappropriate comments regarding incidents occurring in international matches.

“India’s Shubman Gill will also face disciplinary measures for seemingly criticizing the decision to declare him out on the fourth day of the Test, in violation of article 2.7, which prohibits public criticism or inappropriate comments related to incidents in international matches. The young opener has been fined 15 percent of his match fee,” stated an official ICC announcement.

“The television umpire, Richard Kettleborough, ruled that Cameron Green’s catch to dismiss Gill was taken cleanly. Gill subsequently made a social media post later in the day that seemed to cast doubt on the decision,” the statement added.

Ultimately, India suffered a comprehensive 204-run defeat against Australia in the World Test Championship final at The Oval.
