England Cricketers Might Have to Be Pulled Out During the Latter Stages of the 2022 IPL
The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League has not started yet but so many things are already happening. Recent reports suggest that English cricketers who will be part picked during the Mega Auction next month and the ones already retained by the franchises may not be able to finish the whole season.
While the schedule of the IPL this year is yet to be announced, many are keeping track of what could happen throughout the season. Some are already so curious to know what will happen at the Mega Auction. Others find it important to know if certain players will be able to finish all matches so they can place logical bets on the best Indian betting sites.
Why This is a Possibility
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) might decide to pull out its player on the latter stages of the IPL to give them time to prepare for the three Test Series against News Zealand that the team will be hosting. These matches are set to start on June 2 at Lord’s.
The tentative kick-off date of this year’s IPL is March 27 and this means that the tournament will run until the end of May. If the players will finish the whole season, there will be no time to prepare for the New Zealand matches which are not exactly ideal.
The recent Ashes Tour held in Australia was disastrous for the team and ECB chief executive Tom Harrison said that English cricket needs to go through a red-ball re-set. This could help improve the team’s performance. Cricbuzz reported that the ECB has already informed the league and the teams about the potential pull-out of the English cricketers.
The likes of Jonny Bairstow, Mark Wood, Dan Lawrence, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, and Sam Billings are red ballplayers who have signed up for the Mega Auction. Jos Buttler might also miss the final stage of the season as he was retained by the Rajasthan Royals.
Meanwhile, players Eoin Morgan, Tymal Mills, and Liam Livingston are part of the white-ball teams which means that they should be able to complete this season of the IPL. Other English players like Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Chris Woakes are not going to be part of the IPL.
While the ECB has already informed the league about the possibility of pulling the English players out of the final stages of the IPL, it’s still not set in stone. It will also be dependent on how the Mega Auction will go and how many English players will be signed by the franchises.
Why Pulling Out the English Cricketers is Necessary
There were people in the industry like the former captain of England Mike Atherton who has been saying that the ECB should prioritize red-ball cricket instead of T20 leagues like the IPL. David Gower, former England captain and now a commentator also shares the same sentiment, especially after how the team performed The Ashes with a 0-4 defeat.
Gower spoke to BT Sport about this and said, “Joe Root finds himself with people unavailable, because where are they? The IPL. What good is that for English Test cricket?! This is the oldest, more important form of the game, we need to defend it.”
His comment, however, was not taken lightly by IPL fans and followers. Here are some of what people have responded on BT Sport’s interview clip with Gower on Twitter:
“I’m sure Rory Burns, Crawley, Pope, Root, Broad, Anderson, Robinson Hameed, Sibley, Leach, Bess, wood were so busy playing in the IPL that they couldn’t focus on test cricket. Grow up Gower, IPL has helped cricketers financially. These guys deserve the paydays. Accept it.” – @kissingerspeaks
“An IPL which started in 2008 did not affect the Ashes 5-0 loss in 2013 or the 4-0 loss in 2017. But it surely was the reason for the 2022 4-0 loss. And for sure, it didn’t help England win the 2019 ODI WC. That was all due to the erm … T20 Vitality Blast!” – @CowCorner183
Some also brought The Hundred into the conversation. One said, “How can anyone blame the IPL when we ruined our domestic schedule to accommodate The Hundred? Look closer to home and get rid of that ridiculous competition #OpposeTheHundred”. – @planty79
All these comments prompted Gower to clarify the issue. He clarified on Twitter that he has nothing against the IPL. In his tweet, he said, “It appears one has to explain things to the hard of hearing – I’m not against the IPL – it is a phenomenon – but I am against England contracted players being unavailable to play for England because of it.”
